HSE Guidance HSG47

Continually reviewing our business processes to ensure delivery of the highest health, safety, welfare & environmental standards on-site, the latest in our rolling training programme is focused on our in-house groundworks team. On 4th July we held a bespoke training course covering the requirements of HSE Guidance HSG47 Avoiding Danger from Underground Services. Eight of our Groundworkers attended the King Offa site in St Albans for a training course presented and developed by Gary Beckley from SHE MANAGEMENT LIMITED, with focus on the risks and safe systems of work when avoiding danger with underground cables. It also covered the requirements for excavation marshals (banksmen) and their duties and outlined various ways of identifying services (such as CAT and Genny, GPR etc.).

CCS x Learn Live News Channel

Neilcott are proud to have taken part in last weeks inaugural Work Experience Week, a joint scheme by Considerate Constructors Scheme, Learn Live News Channel and Built Environment Academy. Our Project Manager, Mike Jameson MCIOB signed up to the scheme with CCS, working alongside our Social Value Manager, Jenny Bignell and Sustainability & Social Value Co-ordinator Faye Stapleton, to host and deliver hands-on industry experience and mentorship to students from Ravenswood School. Mentoring x4 year 12 students  to develop and progress their assigned Highways Project, which comprised planning, costing and designing part of a new road in England. Students attended our site at Churchill Court to develop a greater understanding of the construction environment and associated roles, whilst also accessing in person expert/technical advice from designated Neilcott mentors to support the development of their project. Working with our mentors over the course of the week, students considered all aspects of project planning and delivery, including traffic management, costings, sustainability, and social value, with their confirmed selection compiled within a presentation for presenting to CCS. The Ravenswood students came 4th place out of 11, with their presentation considered very robust and well thought out. Thank you to Considerate Constructors Scheme for enabling us to be part of such a great scheme, inspiring the next generation to consider construction related careers.

LCP x Serious About Youth

We were delighted to welcome one of our many Serious About Youth (SAY) work experience candidates, Hussain Al-Nawab, to complete one-week’s work experience with us.   This placement was particularly special for us, as we had Hussain join us on-site at the Neilcott Headquarters decarbonisation & refurbishment scheme. It was great to see Hussain on-site with our M&E Subcontractor, Kent M&E, who provided him with hands-on experience in the field he is interested in – Electrical Engineering. At Neilcott we are always eager to share our knowledge and inspire others to join a #CareerInConstruction & are continuing to work closely with The London Construction Programme and SAY to facilitate work experience for aspiring construction operatives. The London Construction Programme sat down with Hussain to ask him a few questions about his experience at Neilcott.  What inspired you to pursue a career in construction? I originally wanted to become an electrician, but then I thought, why don’t I do engineering too? So, I combined them together, as it’s the best of both worlds. After carrying out some research I came across the SAY programme which was the perfect way to get my foot in the door.   How did you find out about SAY? My form tutor at school came across a poster and showed me. I thought it was the perfect way to gain experience, so I applied to the programme, and they gave me a placement for one week’s work experience at Croydon College, and another one weeks placement at Neilcott Construction Limited in Mays half term. They told me about all the various career opportunities, which really opened my eyes.   What aspect of your experience have you enjoyed the most? I really enjoyed removing all the tiles from the site and figuring out where the wiring goes. It sounds tedious, but I find it fun to tidy up all the mess that’s left behind!   How are you finding the work environment? It’s fun, very open, feels like one big family and I feel very included. As it’s the first live site I have been to, everything I do will receive feedback, but I’m open to that because it helps me learn. I am told how to do things this way for this reason which I’m happy about because I learn that way.   What has been the most rewarding part of your experience so far? I would say the whole experience itself is rewarding because I’m here on a site which I’ve never been to before and I get to see firsthand what it’s like and learn new things.   How do you balance your work and study commitments? I prioritise my education and I study every night. Once I have finished revising, I focus on work. I feel that if I focus on my education, it’ll give me a better future in the long term.   Would you recommend SAY to others? 100% It’s been really eye opening and helpful, I’ve been telling my friends to apply to the programme as you get to see different aspects of the industry.

#MakeItVisible @ Harrow School Site

We had the pleasure of welcoming the #MakeItVisible team last week on our Harrow School dining hall site, where we are currently delivering a complex phased refurbishment to expand and upgrade dining facilities. This is following the recent completion of state-of-the-art new STEM facilities at the prestigious boarding school, as part of their ambitious development programme. The #MakeItVisible taskforce joined us to meet with our staff and supply chain to talk about all of the brilliant ways the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity are working to make mental health support accessible to all construction workers. At Neilcott, we are actively working to foster a positive workplace culture that promotes mental health awareness, creating a supportive and inclusive environment for our staff. That’s why we are company supporters of the #LighthouseCharity, and their goal to make mental health visible on-site. The site visit included a stand down ‘all hands’ Toolbox Talk to everyone on site, with the taskforce encouraging open conversations by sharing their first-hand life experiences and focus on the importance of positive mental health and wellbeing. We also provided an ice cream truck to keep everyone cool during the talk. The taskforce provided a safe space for open discussion and addressed a wide range of wellbeing issues, including financial concerns, debt, bills, illnesses, injuries and cancer support, highlighting the ways in which this incredible charity can provide support. Thank you to the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity & the brilliant #MakeItVisible team for braving the heat to come along and speak to the Neilcott site team about the many ways that they can support everyone working within the construction industry (and their families!). The construction industry is beleaguered by sobering suicide & mental health statistics, therefore, through an active mental health first aider training programme, we are taking steps to educate our team to recognise the signs and symptoms of our colleagues that are suffering from stress, anxiety or depression and start the conversation to assist in their recovery.
